It's New Year's Eve at the Steamie. Time for the last “washin' o' the year”. Time for a wee crack and a laugh i' yer pals. Time for a greet an' a “wee nippie” tae cheer ye a' up or droon yer sorrows.

The women of the Steamie come together and in turn tell us something of themselves – their lives, loves, hopes and disappointments. We laugh with them one moment, despair the next and cry as well.

"The Steamie” gives a rare glimpse of the lives of ordinary women of Glasgow, or indeed any other Scottish city, in the early 20th century - how they were treated, what was expected of them and how they themselves felt.

Our heroines, Stella and Regina, originally played by Connie Booth and Pam Ferris, are understudies to Helen of Troy and Clytemnestra, Helen's sister, in a Greek Tragedy.

Stella is middle-aged and a professional actress who still dreams of stardom: Regina, also middle-aged, has given up dreaming and prefers knitting and escaping to Sainsbury's before they close.

The action is all within the four walls of the understudies dressing-room during a performance in a “high thought of” London Theatre.

The characters you see are real; the characters you only hear are mythical. It is a very funny play.

Stella Pat McInroy
Regina Caroline Pennant Jones

Victor and Harlan are two young philosophy

professors who have been friends, rivals and

inveterate pranksters since their student

days, but things have changed. Victor has

turned into a wild hedonist in keeping with his

belief that “When you're dead, you're dead”,

while Harlan has become a dull stoic leading a

strict unemotional existence in preparation for

the afterlife.

They are on holiday with their long suffering wives in the Canadian wilderness, and Victor has devised a prank which he believes will prove the falseness of Harlan's philosophy and shake him out of his passionless state – but the prank goes horribly wrong. After a heated argument a shot is fired and one of the professors lies dead.

This is far from the end of the story however; in

fact, the nightmare is just beginning ......
